During the 2024 legislative session of the Colorado General Assembly representatives introduced House Bill, HB24-1153 Physician Continuing Education. The bill was finalized and signed by Governor Polis on June 4, 2024. The legislation became effective on August 7, 2024.
What does this mean for physicians licensed in Colorado? Here are the requirements:
- Physicians must complete 30 hours of CME credits during the 24 months preceding the renewal, reinstatement, or reactivation of the physician’s medical license
- Topics are selected by the physician and may include any topics specified by the Colorado Medical Board (CMB)
- The CMB has initiated a stakeholder process to consider requiring CME credit hours relating to the following topics*
- Health disparities and outcomes data;
- Reproductive, sexual, and gender-based health care; and
- Explicit and implicit bias
- Physicians shall affirm on their license renewal form that s/he has complied with the CME requirement
- Up to 5% of physician renewals may be audited annually – chosen at random
- If audited, the physician must submit proof of the CME programs completed and the CME credit hours awarded
- Failure to comply with the board audit, without reasonable cause, constitutes unprofessional conduct
- The physician’s license is then inactive until reinstated by the board
- Existing fees on physician licensure renewals may be increased by the director of the division of professions and occupations in the department of regulatory agencies to cover any additional costs associated with implementing the CME requirement
Physicians who are board certified may use CME credits reported for MOC/CC recertification towards their Colorado medical license renewal.
Physicians should be prepared to meet the new CME requirements
for the 2027 license renewal cycle.
*The total number of CME credit hours required per license renewal cycle cannot exceed 30 CME credits.
